The Dreaded Price Increase (we’re sorry!)

By George

Hey folks,

As the title suggests, this isn’t a fun post and it’s something we’ve been putting off for about 3 years now. We’ve managed to hold our prices pretty much static since opening in 2018, but each year our costs for inventory, space and time keep increasing and that doesn’t really look like it’s going to change anytime soon. So, starting Labor Day, we’re going to need to add around $5 to most items ($10 for surgery and a couple of other underpriced items) to make sure we can continue to pay rent and keep the doors open. I’m really sorry to have to do this, and I seriously hope this doesn’t push care outside of anybody’s price range but unfortunately we’re at a point where we’re operating at capacity, scheduling several weeks out and still not reliably covering the costs to do so.

Notable Changes:

  • In an effort to mitigate some of the impact from this, we’ll be offering a $10 discount for kittens under 4 lbs. since their surgeries tend to be faster, smoother, and require fewer resources meaning that we can still afford to keep their cost the same.

  • We’ll also be splitting out a 5th level for dentals to avoid the need to raise prices on the others. At the moment we have Grade 4 dental procedures taking anywhere from 3-6 hours, which is a ridiculous range for a single tier. It turns out there are more than 4 levels of things that can go wrong with a mouth.

For any weirdos out there that get excited by charts and math like me, the below is a high level overview of the cashflow for the clinic. It doesn’t tell you much more than the initial paragraph, but it’s a lot prettier to look at (in my opinion anyways). We’ve been growing nicely, but our inventory costs increase to match every time we do, and we’ve reached the limit of our space and staff meaning that we’re going to need to stop growing. So, the nice happy green line on the top is going to stop trending upwards, but the angry red line on the bottom is going to continue its inexorable decline towards the bankruptcy abyss if we don’t stop it, dragging the blue line down with it. We take a lot of pride in keeping that blue line as close to 0 as possible without technically being a non-profit, but if it spends too much time below that we start to get into trouble. That’s probably about as exciting as I can really make this stuff sound.

The Services Page has been updated to reflect the changes so please check there for details (that made a lot more sense than repeating the whole thing here), but if you have any questions or feel like I’ve glossed over something, please don’t hesitate to email the clinic and I’ll either respond or add it to this post, or both.

As always, thank you for supporting us through the years — you folks are the only reason this place is possible!
